Balık ekmek, or fish in bread, is a grilled fish fillet sandwich often served as a street food in Istanbul.
The perfect meal. Two fat pieces of fresh, crunchy on the outside chewy on the inside, with a freshly grilled fish fillet inside. Onions, lettuce, maybe a small leaf of parsley for garnish. Lemon juice and salt as a sauce. Optional pickles called turşu (sold separately.)
Available throughout Istanbul, and usually ranging in price from about 4tl from a street seller to 10tl in a restaurant, a fish sandwich never disappoints. Find street sellers next to any ferry station or in Sirkeci to the left of the Galata Bridge there is a row of boats grilling and selling fresh fish breads all day every day.
