Döner is meat grilled on a vertical spit and shaved off into slices
Döner is not a terribly original idea. Meat on a stick grilled with fire. It is this simplicity which keeps the food a popular and widespread choice all across Turkey, Europe, and the Middle East (usually called shawarma in Arabic.)
The meat is most commonly beef, lamb, or chicken… though there are perpetual rumors circulating about cheap döner in the provinces being made of anything from donkeys to seagulls.
Common ways of serving döner include; as a sandwich (yarim ekmek döner,) with rice (pilav üstü,) and baked with bread and tomato sauce with yogurt (Iskendar.)
