The famous town of Urfa lies in the Southeastern part of Turkey, not far from the Syrian border. One of the most popular kebaps is named after the city, this Urfa kebap is made from minced meat, seasoned but not spicy. Adana kebap, also named after a city, is similar but is more spicy.
In the tradition of grilled meat, Şanlı Urfa is serving up a fine selection of kebaps as a wrap (dürüm) or with bulgur pilav and salad. I selected the Adana dürüm, despite the conflict with the restaurant name, and enjoyed it thoroughly for 7tl. The acı ezme it was served with, a tomato, onion, parsley, and pepper chutney, was tasty. Also available is grilled chicken şiş, liver, and eggplant.
Small tables are provided outside on the busy alley, don’t stick your feet too far out from beneath the table or they might get squashed by a hand cart, and avoid sitting inside as t the grill fills the salon with a dense cloud of meat flavored smoke. Apparently the exhaust fans are not working, or the vent hood is only for style.
